Sue has been writing and teaching writing for many years and has held writing retreats in Italy, India and Greece.
On this retreat she returns to Tuscany – one of her favourite places in the world to write – to set the scene for her remarkable process and to inspire her writers in creating settings and characters by using the sights, light and mood of the beautiful Tuscan landscape.
Interspersed between teaching sessions there will be excursions to some of beautiful places surrounding our villa and also time to just wander alone or find a quiet spot to sit and work on your writing pieces.
Sue will teach her masterclass in the mornings and beginners in the afternoons. Evenings will be spent at the villa or the occasional dinner out.
You will form bonds with fellow writers that will help nurture and support you when you return home – and you will become part of a close network of writers who have benefitted from Sue’s unique teaching style.

Sue has a loyal band of students who have returned again and again to her retreats - because they gain so much from them. Many have attended other writing courses but come back to Sue because of the effectiveness of her process and her passion for teaching creatinve writing.

The retreat will be held at a private villa in northern Tuscany, known as ‘I Cinghiali’ or ‘The Wild Boars’ in the hills of the Garfagnana, a magical green oasis where the pace of life has changed little over the ages. The property is situated on an acre of land on a hillside overlooking the ruins of a tenth century fortress. It has been lovingly restored by our host and owner, Buzz McCarthy - an Australian who now shares her year between London and this Tuscan paradiso.

Ignored by many guidebooks Lucca has the good fortune to be missed by the annual hordes of tourists descending on Italy and is one of the country’s least disturbed treasures. A short drive from the villa Lucca is a favourite with all who know Italy's more hidden gems.

Most of our meals will be had in the villa, using local produce purchased fresh each day - and of course, with some fine local wine. On occasion we will venture into the nearby towns to savour the delights of the restaurants and imbibe the spirit of the region's architecture and community.

One of the most memorable - and important - aspects of our retreats is the bond you form with your fellow retreaters. On each of our retreats around the world writers have found companions to share this experience and to help maintain the skills and passion long after you return home. We expect this to be the case with our Tuscan journey.

Little needs to be said about the unparalleled beauty of this region of the world. Our villa is in Caprignana, about 65 kms north of Lucca, nestled between a 500 hectare national park offering wonderful opportunities for walking and the imposing marble mountains of Carrara. With wonderful views and plenty of places to walk or just sit and muse, it is an ideal location for our retreat.
